Make Rock Candy - wikiHow

How to Make Rock Candy

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

This is a fun and easy project, perfect for children (with adult supervision). These are the steps to make 1 "growth" of rock candy, however you can make more than one at a time.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup of water
  • 2 or more cups sugar
  • 1/4 cups corn syrup
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Flavoring (optional)
  • Form of stick (pencil,toothpick,pen,etc.)
  • A paper clip
  • A string
  • A jar/glass cup

Steps

  1. Start a pot of water boiling on the stove.
  2. Tie a piece of string around the middle of the pencil/stick/butter knife. The string should be long enough so that when the pencil is placed over the top of the glass, the string will come up just short of the bottom.
  3. Wet the string with a little water and roll it in the sugar. Put the paper clip on the end of the string to act as a weight and help the string stay straight. Lay the stick over the top of the glass jar so that the string hangs down inside the jar, but not touching the bottom of the jar.
  4. When the water has started boiling, remove it from the heat and let the water settle.
  5. Stir in the sugar and corn syrup, 1 tablespoon at a time. Continue adding sugar until it starts collecting at the bottom of the pot and won't dissolve even when you stir. This will take a while and a good bit of sugar but not too much.
  6. If you want to add flavoring or color, stir it in now.
  7. Pour the sugar/syrup solution into the glass until it is about 1" from the top.
  8. Place the pencil over the jar and allow the string to dangle into the solution. Don't let the string settle on the bottom or sides of the glass.
  9. Place the glass somewhere that it can sit for a while undisturbed (but do not refrigerate it). After a day or so, you should be seeing crystal growth on the string.
  10. Leave the string in the solution until the crystals are big enough for you or have completely stopped growing.
  11. Remove the string from the glass and let dry.
  12. After you let dry please wait until crystal is formed.

Tips

  • To make colored crystals, you can add food dye when you add the sugar.
  • To add some flavor, you can add a few drops of lemon or lime juice (or other flavors) or tie a small piece of hard candy at the bottom of the string, like a piece of a peppermint or cinnamon candy.
  • Natural fiber string like cotton or twine will work best. Nylon fiber and other polymer string won't stimulate crystal growth very well. Or you can use wooden popsicle sticks (don't get the colored ones because the dye may not be edible!)
  • Glass jars with a hole cut in the lid work great and keep dust from settling into the solution. If you are using a normal glass, you can cover the top with tin foil.
  • If you want the crystals to grow larger, let a little air into the jar by raising the lid (you can rest it on a couple of pencils balanced on the jar rim).
  • If the string keeps floating, you can weigh the end down with something. Small pieces of store bought rock candy work best and will make your own crystals start to grow faster.
  • How does this work? The water-sugar mixture is saturated at boiling temperature (this means that it cannot dissolve any more sugar) When the mixture lowers in temperature it becomes supersaturated- meaning that it contains more sugar than it should at that temperature. When more sugar is added at room temperature the mixture "realizes" that it has more sugar than it should and the excess sugar crystallizes on the string.
  • A common water:sugar ratio is 1:2. For example, 1 cup of water to 2 cups of sugar.
  • This is a great science experiment.

Warnings

  • Make sure an adult is supervising since you will be boiling water.
  • Do not mess with the jar or put your fingers in it. This disrupts the forming process of the crystalline structure. It may not prevent it from working, but it will hinder the progress of the crystal growth.
  • Too much sugar is bad for your teeth, and other parts of your body. Only have one piece of rock candy a day, and drink some water after you finish yours.
  • Rock candy is similar in appearance to crack cocaine. Make it very clear to police officers and others that it's candy.
  • If you are a child or teen and decide to make this, it's a good idea not to make around a stereotypical parent as they will very likely attempt to reduce the sugar content, for example from a water-sugar ratio of 1:2 to to 2:1 or less. This can result in some very dull rock candy that tastes "watered down".

Things You'll Need

  • Clean glass or jar
  • Pencil or skewer stick
  • Paper clip
  • Cotton string or twine
  • Pot to boil water
  • Spoon (for stirring)
  • Sugar
  • Corn syrup

Make a CD Sleeve from Paper - wikiHow

How to Make a CD Sleeve from Paper

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Now that many of us are buying CDs in those big economy stacks, they don't come with envelopes or jewel cases. This is inconvenient if you run out of CD holders.
Here's a quick and easy way to create a cover for your CD on the fly. It's good if you need a place to put a CD where it won't get scratched up.

Steps

Without Adhesive
Here's a simple version of a homemade CD envelope that can be made out of a single sheet of letter-sized paper without the use of any adhesives, clips, brads, nails, tree sap, or spit!
  1. Fold a sheet of US letter-sized, or A4 sized paper (US=8.5x11 inches, A4=210 × 297 mm) horizontally at 6 inches or 16 cm, leaving a 1-inch or 2.5cm overlap.
  2. Fold in both sides at approximately 1 5/8 inches or 4.5 cm. If you have no ruler, just center your CD in the middle and try to fold both sides equally.
  3. Open the paper flat, and re-fold the two vertical side strips.
  4. Slide the CD into the channel of the longer side.
  5. Refold over the horizontal.
  6. Fold the 1-inch (2.5 cm) overlap to complete the square.
  7. Tuck the overlap into the remaining channel.
  8. Press flat.

Video

Stop buying plastic CD and DVD cases, and watch how you can make paper CD cases using paper recycled from your printer. Be green, recycle, and be crafty at the same time.

With Adhesive
  1. Take an 8 1/2 by 11 piece of paper. Fold about an inch and a half on both long sides.
  2. Taking the shorter side (so that the folds that you just made are running north to south), fold it up about 3.5 inches.
  3. Tape (or glue) the sides shut so you make a pocket.
    • You can also fold the paper around the CD in a square shape, and then staple it in the middle, taking care not to staple into the CD.

  4. Fold the top over so you now have a top flap.

Tips

  • You can print an image in the center, in the top 5 inches of the paper that will appear on the front of the envelope. The back space can be used as well, but be sure to leave the bottom inch essentially alone, as it will be tucked into the fold and be unseen when closed. Remember to decorate the paper before you fold it!
  • On the back of the sleeve you can write all the songs on the CD.
  • If you made the CD using a playlist in ITunes, you can click File-->Print, select Jewel case CD insert and then from the drop down list, select "Single Side (Black and White). THis will print the song names and artists from the playlist you selected on a perfect spot to create a CD sleeve.
  • Use card stock instead of plain paper for more durability. Heavier paper is not necessarily easier to use however.
  • You can put a paper towel in it so it doesn't get scratched. However, paper towels are still wood products, and fabric would be a much safer alternative.
  • If you're having trouble tucking in the top layer, try cutting about a millimeter at the edges.

Warnings

  • If you glue it, make sure the glue is completely dry before you put the CD in it.
  • This is not very good for major transportation but it works quite well for placing in the car and taking to school. This is especially good for CDs you burn yourself!
  • Handle CDs with care so as to not scratch them.

Things You'll Need

  • A piece of letter-sized paper (8.5x11 inches)
  • A measuring device, like a ruler
  • A CD to enclose
  • Optional: Two piggy banks to cheer you on! (see photos)
  • Optional: Glue, tape, or stapler
